In all of us, I think, there is something that is attracted to the odd, the strange, and the freaky side of life. I was inspired to write this post because heck, there are some pretty weird music videos out there, and I wanted to share them. So I did some research. While there is no shortage of articles and blog posts compiling some of the most bizarre, I had two main problems with most of them. First, some of them are downright disturbing. Additionally, a good percentage of them were not only bizarre in their imagery, but the music was too unorthodox or uninspired for my taste. So what I bring you today is a list of five weird, quirky, and/or whimsical music videos that maintain family-friendly imagery and decent music. Because music is after all more important than the video. In other words, these videos won’t damage your sanity.
(If you’re not interested in weird videos, scroll to the end of the post because I don’t know everything and I’m asking for your suggestions on something…)
Note: neither The Window Philosopher blog nor Peuce L. Monk can guarantee that your sanity will remain intact under any circumstances. The above assertions are based on personal experience.
The Avalanches – Frontier Psychiatrist
In my opinion, “Frontier Psychiatrist” has one of the weirdest videos known to mankind, let alone to the music industry. It’s so bizarre that I had to include it as an honorable mention. And the music is bearable. However, one small bit of imagery precludes me from adding it to the official list.
So, as an honorable mention, if you would like to watch it, or at least the first minute or two, you can find it here.
Jars of Clay – Work
Oh come on, you know I’m a huge Jars of Clay fan. So maybe I’m a little biased, but I think this is a pretty neat video. The music rocks. The fact that it’s one static shot and the room slowly fills up with water makes it odd, but is it weird enough to be number one? I think not.
YouTube commenters, stop comparing the lead singer to Severus Snape.
Modest Mouse – Dashboard
The video for “Dashboard” isn’t super bizarre until about 2 minutes and 20 seconds in. Then it gets weird. The music is also good. It has a rather catchy guitar hook, not unlike “Float On” (another odd video… almost worthy of #5).
It also tells a story. But it still lacks a bit of weirdness for it to stack up against the non-musical, inappropriate competition. Fear not, dear readers!
The Chemical Brothers – The Salmon Dance
Hip-hop is not my jam. But this I can deal with. It’s a song about salmon, people. It’s whimsical.
Plus, the video is way trippy. Pretty awesome CGI too.
We are approaching superior weird levels.
The Superions – Fruitcake
Anyone who has heard the B-52s knows the unmistakable sound of Fred Schneider’s voice as he doesn’t exactly sing, but narrates the lyrics of “Rock Lobster”. (Another weird video…) The Superions are his side project (click here for more of their wackiness), and true to form, have they released any truly bizarre songs?
I don’t know if the title tells you anything…
“Fruitcake” is downright funny, and quite weird once the fruitcake takes on a life of its own. It would have been number one on this list, but the song that did make it there features actual singing… and someone turning into a cake… Other than that, these two are nearly equal in their freakiness.
So, without further ado:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Don’t Come Around Here No More
On its surface, this is a song about a guy who never wants to see your face again and that’s that. However, what the video becomes is a distorted Alice in Wonderland, where a musical Mad Hatter (Tom Petty) destroys the boundaries of reality in order to play tricks on the person he’s singing about. These include creating giant teacups, shrinking people, and turning them into cakes.
Just watch the video. You’ll be glad you did.
And his face at the end…
One Last Thing
I hope you’ve enjoyed this foray into the wacky world of strange and unforgettable cinematic musicality. One thing I will ask is for your suggestions on a future music video post.
I love weird things, but I want to make a post showcasing some of the best messages and cinematography music videos have to offer. Ones that give you the same feeling that you get when you watch a good movie. Videos worthy of praise for their service to our human existence.
So if you have any ideas, please post them in the comments below, because your voice matters to me. ‘Kay?
God bless you all!
